There is currently no deal in sight to resolve the trade conflict between the United States (US) and the People’s Republic of China (PRC), despite what Donald Trump, President of the US, might say. On 22nd April, Trump stated that tariffs would come down ‘substantially’ and a deal would be done ‘pretty quickly’. But, two days later, Beijing used a favourite phrase of Trump’s to refute the reports of a trade deal – ‘fake news’.
Meanwhile, Rachel Reeves, Chancellor of the Exchequer, made critical remarks about the PRC’s trade behaviour: ‘It’s not right that some countries run large persistent trade surpluses and others large persistent trade deficits – especially when those surpluses aren’t always because of transparent policies.’
