As the People’s Republic of China (PRC) celebrated the 76th anniversary of its founding on the 1st October, known as ‘National Day’, the China Coast Guard (CCG) conducted a flag-raising ceremony on a ship in the waters off the disputed Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea.
A slew of other nationalist, assertive actions followed in the wake of National Day, including an official statement by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) of its interpretation of the United Nations (UN) Resolution 2758, claiming that the resolution asserts Taiwan belongs to the PRC. This resolution was passed in 1971, and recognised the PRC as the legitimate representative of China at the UN, expelling the Republic of China (Taiwan) from its seat. Despite CCP claims, the resolution does not, in fact, state that Taiwan is part of the PRC.
